    Default Phal. amboinensis cross

Here is a nice plant of Phal. amboinensis x ?. I posted this previously but now the two spikes (first blooming, at that!) are maxed out and thought some of you might like to see it one more time!

This is the plant that I bought as Phal. bellina. When it opened I told the grower/importer and he sent me a true bellina and told me to keep this one. He thinks it is a natural/or intentional cross between amboinensis and another species.

Guesses are welcome as to who dad may be! I don't like having bastard orchid children hanging around.

I wish you were in this country so that I could trade or give it to you. It has been in bloom for months and months! It is an easy to grow species.

BTW, so has the bellina that I got at the same time. I saw it has a new spike well on the way. Looks like another 6 months or so for that one too! DANG...

i live in this country....i love phal species and primary hybrids.....

how large is your bellina, garland? how many sets of leaves and whats the ls? ive got one too, and it seems like it should be large enough to flower. what do you have yours planted in? with your two blooming phal beauties, youre definitely doing well with them. maybe you should change your name to phalhead?

My bellina has a total of 7 leaves, the longest 8 1/2" in length. It is currently potted in a 5" clay pot in 100% sphagnum moss. It has been in spike for some time now and currently has one primo blossom and a very nice lemony fragrance. (Another new spike recently appeared!)

I moved all of my phals (about 6 total) into sphag after my last visit to Norman's Orchids in Monte Vista, CA. All of his plants are now planted in sphag in 5" clear plastic pots and doing beautifully. He thinks they seem to thrive better in the constantly-moist media. This is his opinion (and mine since seeing his 250,000 or so phals direct from SE Asia). Your mileage may vary depending on your growing conditions.

I'm toying with the idea of trying a couple of phals in s/h Primeagra. I understand the results are generally very good. I'm doing very well with s/h with paphs. I'm using city water with Dyna-Gro and Superthrive on all plants.

    Hope this helps!

well, my bellina isnt that big....yet!

im growing with sphag too. my grown-up/teenager phals are in straight sphag, and my seedlings are in sphag+lots of broken-up styro (thanks for the tip, uncle lou ). theyre doing really well. i think sphag is great. i had a catt growing in it over the summer, and there were roots galore. i repotted it into diatomite (moisture retention without the breakdown) when the sphag looked tapped. thats the one bad sphag characteristic: quick dissintegration.
