    Default Brassia?

    hi folks,
    this plant puzzles me....
    got this one not long ago and supposed to be brassia rex, during the transport 3 spikes were broken off and only 1 bloom remained.

    i just dont know what to make of it, either undeveloped bloom or some strange kind of hybrid???
    i also find the lip quite confusing, doesnt look like a "rex",

    anyone?

    Ron, you def caught my interest with that title. Boy would it be nice to have more blooms. In my experience the bottom one on a spike, which that one appears to be, can turn out a little troubled on some of these Brassias.

    But there are problems in spite of that: 1) For a Rex the coloring seems off, especially with the lack of markings on the three outer petals. 2) The shape is off, should be much more sweeping and much longer 3) You are right on the lip, it is shaped like a straight-up Oncidium lip, the Brassia lips narrow down into a V-point

    I agree with your assumption that you've got either an Oncid/Brassia hybrid, or just a crappy underdevloped bottom bloom. You might be stuck waiting until the next spike develops to know for sure.

    @randy,
    i got the plant for quite a steal, just at the entrance from the last orchidshow in manila and im not sure if this vendor was involved with the show.

    @derek,
    thank you soooo much, i came to similar conclusions with the bottom bloom, but the thing is nobody bothers taking pix of those, its usually the whole long spike.
    i still have my doubts just like you, seeing the lip and all, even for an underdeveloped bloom the shape is just totally off.

    as you said, another wait...grrrr...

    I think it is something other than a pure brassia.

    Cheers,
