I love these little guys. I have a sizable slab of cork bark I've been holding back just to mount a cluster of these.

Randy they are warm to intermediate plants. After all they originate from the Caribbean. I have killed a lot of them until I discovered that they like open potting - they do best mounted on slabs or branches. I now leave them in small , slatted plastic pots (like the Thais' plastic vanda pots) without any growing medium and they are thriving, until I can find nice driftwood to mount them on.

I am posting pictures of my tolumnias blooming now. I expect the others to bloom soon.

Hi Catttan, humidity in Malaysia really helps the plant to survive without any media. However, in Calgary, it needs some barks, but the pot must be as tight as possible.

Hi Nora, yes, it must be the humidity here.On non-rainy days I water them twice a day like the rest of my orchids and the open potting allows the roots to dry out pretty fast and that was the secret I learnt from a successful tolumnia grower here.

Nice to learn that you can grow tolumnias in Calgary. I understand it gets pretty cold there in winter.

Calgary is really cold, with the furnace turn on more than 1/2 of the year, it's not a good place to grow orchids, especially Vanda types here, except with a greenhouse.
Had been to KL couple years ago, the humidity really kills me, but good for orchids, and it's way more humid than my home city, HK.

I love these little guys! Their bright colors always make me think of ice cream and candy! Yours are particularly nice...I wish I could grow them...it's too cool where I am most of the year. Even now in mid-July, evenings are getting down to around fifty degrees. I'm having to re-learn what plants I can grow since I moved from the southeast.
