Talking Asconopsis Irene Dobkin - a 40-year love affair

I first saw pictures of Asconopsis Irene Dobkin in 1969 and it was love at first sight! It took more than 10 years after that (late 70's) for the first mericlones to reach Malaysia and I managed to obtain 2 plants , available only in thumbpots at RM20 each, only to have them die 4 months later. Irene Dobkin is a notoriously difficult plant to grow. In those 4 months, in spite of all the TLC lavished on them, they didn't put out a single new root or leaf. I found out later that almost all plants in the same batch perished. In early 1980 on a visit to friend's nursery i discovered that he had 3 plants in 2in pots that were in a pitiful state, all dehydrated with withered roots. He said that he had sold off most of the healthier plants months ago and these runts were all that were left.He agreed to part with them at cost price (he said) after much persuasion. The same fate befell them as my previous plants, only faster... after just 2 months. After this there was a period of more than 10 years that I didn't grow any orchids.

So imagine my surprise and joy When I attended the recent Penang Flower Festival and saw a healthy blooming size Ascps Irene Dobkin at one of he vendors. The vendor was willing to part with it for only RM25 - US$8 on condition that it stayed as a display plant at his stall in Penang for the duration of the show and he would bring it to the Kedah Show the subsequent week.I took delivery of it after 3 days on display in Kedah Orchid Show.

The flowers and buds were much the worse for wear and all the buds on the main spike and 2 side branches blasted.Anyway I managed to take pictures of the few remaining flowers.

I normally would not post pictures of flowers that are not in their 'prime' but you have to forgive me this time. I just have to share my excitement with OT members as this is only the second time I have seen the flowers of Irene Dobkin 'live'.

NB : Asconopsis Irene Dobkin = Phal Doris x Ascocentrum miniatum. Size of flower = about 1 in.

It is a beauty, indeed and it certainly deserves our attention; I fully understand you why it is overcame you so many years ago.

WOW! I can certainly see your desire for having this plant and the frustration with them not living for you. Congratulations on finding another and good luck with growing it successfully for many years to come.

Now when I find a plant i've been really looking for...I buy two. Now I understand why. When I first joined I wondered why anyone would buy more than one of any plant. With this lovely plant I can certainly see why you've bought so many of them. Happy future bloomings...and aged or not, these are lovely!

    Thumbs up

Just looking at the pictures and reading your story I am falling in love with that orchid too. What a beautiful cross and gorgeous blooms; even the colour of the spike seems to enhance the flowers. Thanks for sharing with us, and I'm so happy you got it finally

    Question

    Dear Yew,
It is indeed a beautiful and delicate bloom...what will you do this time that you didn't do for it before?
