One of the parents is Odm.Florence Stirling - Dr.Stirling who made it was of the generation before me - he was an old gent' member of the Orchid Committee (RHS) who had a kindly word for the young man ( me) asking him about odont' culture , in the 1960s.... So of sentimental interest, to me, this cross. Odm Flo.Stirling btw was so variable that the long-gone Odont specialist nursery, once had 24 different colour variants of it as the cover picture of their catalogue. Yes, back in ancient days, orchid nurseries had printed catalogues...and their prices were almost exactly the same as today ! A young odont seedling in flower for the first time in 1961 when I bought my first plant, say US$25 - which at that time was what, say, a postman would earn in one week.I was not a postman- but I couldn't afford to buy many !

However, this is a first flowering since I bought it some 10 months ago , put straight into S/H - which these things really love. Should do better on the next bulb , although the object of making this cross was to get branched spikes into odonts, which needs extremely good culture to produce. rarely seen by amateurs, I regret - but the Eric Young Foundation ( of whom you will have heard ?) manages it a lot - they grow sopping wet in rock-wool , a recipe for disaster for most of us.

Lovely! I do not have a Wilsonara, but have been looking at them. Glad to know they like S/H. And your background info is fun to read, Geoff.

That's beautiful Geoff. Love the story on the background of the cross. Have tried a few Wilsonaras and Mclellanaras but never been successful with them.

Re old-time catalogues, I agree that in those days the catalogues were not only colourful but educational as well. I still keep a few of them from a nursery in California and the ones I treasure most are the Jones and Scully's ( I think I can mention it as it is no more in business) of Florida.

The background here is just black cloth. I also have a roll with black ,and other colours of velvet , and a few sheets of card from a crafts shop ( sheets about 3 ft x 2 ft - 60 x 90 cm in various colours.
I found, when I used to give talks to orchid societies, and perhaps showed a hundred or more slides ( and that takes me back - I have been all digital for more than 10 years ! ) that having the same background was a bit boring ; so I would mix up shots of plants in the greenhouse - or of course if possible in the field in their natural habitat - with some against plain backgrounds. And even then, black suits white and lighter coloured flowers , but not dark ones . Red velvet makes green flowers - e.g. some of the Coelogynes look superb ! Complementary colours of course, as any artist will tell you.
