My first time to hear of the varietal name .... now I know after searching on the web. (Phalaenopsis stuartiana and IOSPE PHOTOS)

This must be rare (and expensive) since this is my very first time to see a yellow variety specially here in the Philippines where this plant is supposed to be endemic. Looks like the Philippines is losing a lot of its rare and unique orchid species to other places ....

What needs to be remembered here is that these plants are from specimens in cultivation. It is not hybridising in the strict sense; but the parents being used are selected for their brighter colours or some other feature. The plant appears to me to be Phalaenopsis stuartiana fma. nobilis, which was described by Reichenbach is 1881.

I'd say it is a hybrid, but it is beautiful, no matter what it is.

A photo of the callus should end the discussion as to whether this is a hybrid or (a line-bred) Phalaenopsis stuartiana fma. nobilis, although at this point I believe it is the latter.

By the way, Reichenbach f. in 1881 described this as a variety nobilis in 1881; the late Eric Christenson was the one who demoted it to forma status in 2001.

that is a very beautiful plant that you got.

BTW, can anyone educate me on the difference between a "var" and a "forma".
