    Default Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica, Philippine Orchids

This orchid was in my previous post as I thought of them as Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana from Leyte.

Later, I noticed the lip shape which is belongs to Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica.

@Wally - I have my bases why I considered this as Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica other than Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana. Regardless of coloration or any petal shapes, the column is the most important part of the taxonomic description of any Phalaenopsis species. I have true Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana at home that are different.

Also, I think Ron have this variety which this specimen came from Leyte.

Here are some important descriptions should any collectors know.

This site will help us the valuable information of each distinct species:

    Hi Derek,

I am interested to know where you got the statement that the column is the most important part of the taxonomic description of any Phalaenopsis species; to the best of my knowledge, neither Herman Sweet nor Eric Christenson, in their Phalaenopsis monographs in 1981 and 2001 respectively, never made such presumptions. Apart from that, you mentioned that the lip of your featured plant has the lip shape of P. hieroglyphica, which makes me wonder whether you based your identification from the lip, or from the column, which you said is the most important part of the taxonomic description of any Phalaenopsis species.

From the link you presented, please note the shape of the lip of the type specimen and compare it to the shape of that in the photos. This only goes to show how variable the lip shape of P. lueddemaniana is.

    Wally
