This looks just like my Phal that simply won't stop blooming! I bought it at a big box store...could it be possible I have the same variety? It never had a tag...

    Beautiful booms aren't they?

In fact, genuine P. aphrodite subsp. formosana is hard to find now, even in my country.
This one you post, definetely, is not the original P. aphrodite subsp. formosana.
Most of the P. aphrodite subsp. formosana what they call is the commercial type. It has been mixed with many different types of P. amabilis or P. aphrodite. for a very long time.

From what I understand, the plants we are seeing that are referable to Phalaenopsis aphrodite subsp. formosana came not from Taiwan, but from Babuyan Island in the Philippines; these are the ones that have been line bred and sold commercially. Those with variegated leaves, which are being mass-produced in Taiwan, I do not know the provenance.

While it is true that this plant has been crossed with P. amabilis, as well as with P. aphrodite subsp. aphrodite, the fact is that this subspecies also is being line-bred, and that anyone who is familiar enough with the critical characters that define P. aphrodite subsp. formosana should have no trouble identifying them as such.

Bruce, these really are elegant. I also like the big guy in the background watching over them.
