Default Phal Ming Hsing 'yellow boy'

Back when I bought this I thought it was striking for the pink and yellow colors. It put on new buds recently and this is the new flower. Not sure what happened...it's pretty...and very different. I included the pic of the full plant so you could see the flowers are really on the same plant. lol

Phalaenopsis/ XDoritaenopsis flowers often open darker, then fade to their mature colouring. By now you will have seen it for yourself. This is normal (and fun.)

Here is one of my Phals showing something of the difference in colour between older and younger blooms. It is more pronounced in real life, but not as extreme as in your case, I have to say. I would love to know if the darker flower did fade and assimilate in colour and texture or if it persisted in its heteromorphy.

It has not faded, though the yellow at the edges got brighter. When the other new buds open i'll post more pictures.

Hi Connie. Well how about that! I guess with such a rich genetic soup as in today's hybrids, a dose of unpredictability can occur even in the most careful selections. Now then, I have something odd myself- but unlike your beauty, mine is a dud: it's a hybrid between Epidendrum prismatocarpum and Prosthecea Green Hornet. The photo looked so pretty at the on-line shop. However it turns out to be morphologically unstable: fantastically big and vigorous (7 leads already!), but the growths are every which way, and the (profuse) flowers are nearly all malformed (bits all askew or missing or fused...) The second flush is bigger and less unsightly than the first, but I don't think the plant is woth keeping. I reckon they just sent me a random seedling which ought to have beenn discarded. You live and learn.

But how do you throw away something so vigorously alive? There's a conundrum! I don't know what I shall do.

I SO ENVY YOU CONNIE! Florida: all plants outside! The luxury! Bye for now.

Still a striking plant with beautiful flowers. I wonder what will happen next season!

I am designing a new "wall of windows" to replace a garage door. The room will be their overwintering site. But yes...being able to grow these outside makes a huge difference. And my location has made a big difference. It is a luxery that comes with lots and lots of bugs. lol So every growing method has it's drawbacks I think. The only true "good" spot for them is in nature...where they grow without our help....and do just fine. lol
