Another day, another orchid name change. Lovely orchid blooms - whatever day or name.

First time, but not the last! I just got this about four weeks ago and it just bloomed yesterday (Kingidium hookerianum). Like most amateur photographers, I took 12 photographs and this is the only one that came out

Bruce, you seem to know a lot about everything and are the go-to person for any information about orchid growing. I've always wondered this, does the species name, regardless of the genus name it's attached to, bear any resemblance to each other? (I.e., Phalaenopsis/Kingidium hookerianum AND Dendrobium hookerianum). Can I expect the two to look anything alike and how do "they" decide the species name? By the way, who are "they"? Many thanks! CWC...psst...did you see my Kingidium hookerianum that just bloomed?

    My understanding is this:
Many are named for the first person to bloom a particular orchid in Europe. Some for the person to first catalog the orchid. So, no, luddemannia is attached to a number of orchids of different types and they do not look alike. There is a phal and a cattleya luddemannia's and likely others.
