I thought I had a full length photo, but I guess that's another item on the "to do" list.

These are of my Miltassia Shelob 'Okika'. It's actually on its way out, but I expect many more spikes soon.

Thank you - it takes a lot of work to get decent photos - at least for me.

Those are great photos! I think I need a new camera. None of my photos turn out that good.

I've only been using a DSLR for 4 months now - I bought a used Nikon D80 and am still getting used to it - especially tripod work. I find setting up the background the biggest challenge. I'm looking into getting a used screen with off-camera flash that I can set up in minutes - unlike draping black fabric all over the place and trying to accommodate whatever light source I have, depending on the time of day. I used to take perfectly good photos with my point-and-shoot, though, and it was a lot less work. I'm really new at this, except that I've always photographed whatever still-life I was painting at the time, so I have some experience with composition.

I really think that when you take all the care and time and patience to grow a beautiful orchid, you deserve a comparably good record of it. Seems like it takes so long for them to bloom, and yet, even the longer bloomers seem to fly by.

I'm hardly a resource for photography matters - Dorsetman has been photographing his orchids for 40 years, for instance - but I can sympathize with the overwhelming amount of new stuff to learn, so let me know if I can help.

Great photos Maura ! The Milatassia is really beautiful and well photographed, you really have the knack for displaying orchids! The triangular Phalaenopsis is a complete homeotic mutant where the petals have completely transformed into labellum like organs.

Maura - a painter! I'm not surprised, because you obviously have a good eye for composition. Could you share pictures of some of your paintings?
