Look at all of those blooms! WOW. They certainly didn't have anything near this display when I was there a few years ago.

    cheers,

I can imagine orchid enthusiasts stood in front off that display with their botton jaw dropped and dribbling.! I was only their July. Tried to pitch a tent near the bathroom facilities but they wouldnt let me! Those evil geniuses

They don't now either, Bruce ; but once a year they have an "Orchid Festival" and send a large van over to Holland and fill it with orchids in flower bought wholesale , then show them in banks like this.
They do bring out some of their own orchids - often ancient enormous plants - lke a Vanda tricolor, six feet high with half a dozen side growths, and several flower spikes, and so on.
Personally I regard it as rather shameful that Royal Botanic Gardens - the National Institution, paid for out of my Income Tax - I like to tell them - has to go out a and buy a shedload of plants - which I suspect are thrown away after the event , but perhaps it has to be said that they are not in the business of mass-producing anything, just research etc, and also providing reference collections, and the festival does pull in the puinters, and who knows, the odd one may be hooked....so perhaps I have to excuse them
