Default Pink/Harlequin Phalenopsis ? The Odd One

Was shown this odd looking NOID phalaenopsis by the owner of an orchid nursery in Hong Kong a fortnight ago. Among the 5 blooms that were open there was this consistent asymmetrical coloration i.e. clear pink on the left petal and the 'harlequin' pattern on the right petal. I don't know what this phenomenon is called but it was not unattractive. ODD yes, but not unattractive. There were thousands of blooming disposable phalaenopsis ready for the Chinese New Year market but this was the only odd one.

I'm posting this as a matter of interest. BTW the nursery is keeping this for mericloning and breeding.

I've never seen anything like that before. Very strange.

Very odd, indeed...and very pretty! Was it like that on ALL the flowers, or just one or two? Thanks, Yew Betty

I agree it is defiantely not unattractive. Rather a neat color combination and sure fire winner for those who can't decide if they want a solid color or a spotted one. I have seen this too a degree on orchids and other flowers but ir has always been just one bloom/blossom. It will be interesting to see if it blooms the same way on future spikes. I hate hearing you mention 1000's of disposable phals for Chinese New Year. I have seen pictures of the phals offered for sale and they are breath taking. I would be very happy to have them disposed of my way. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That is very strange. Looks like one side was dipped into pink paint! Very cool orchid share, Yew Sung.

All 5 flowers open at the time showed this characteristic, but there were still 5 - 6 uopened buds. After studying the picture I realise that the sepals too showed this asymmetrical coloration.

    What an interestingly bizarre mutation!
