    Default Oncidium Ornithorhyncium In Bloom

Buried in this carpet of lavender blooms are twelve buds/flowers. This is a follow up to the photos of this orchid spiking. Love the scent of lavender soap emanating from these. ALName: Oncidium Ornithorhyncium 004.JPG

Onc ornithorhynchum is a lovely species that hails from northern Central American. It is a cold to warm growing species that grows as an epiphyte in humid forests at altitudes up to 1500 meters It likes a semi-winter rest. For me in the late fall and winter I get numerous fragrant long-lasting flowers. I have mounted this species on cork and it has done well, many times blooming more than once a year. I too like the fragrance of this species. Congrats!!!

This species is properly called Oncidium sotoanum. Oncidium ornithorhynchum is a completely different species. This apparently not so much a reclassification as a case of mistaken identity. The officially described ornithorhychum is synonymous with Onc. pyramidale, a yellow and brown species. Onc. sotoanum (the commonly grown purple species) was never described until 2010.

Thank you for the information Michael. I have written down the name you gave and stand corrected. AL

I am sorry to say it didn't arrive Jordan. I owe you a apology though because I never sent the Christmas Card out I promised you. I did gifts, but spaced cards completely until after Christmas. AL

I'm glad to see 1) that I'm not the only one who grows them shrivelled, and 2) that they can still bloom when they have a few wrinkles. My Oncidium ornithorhynchum (sotoanum? I hope so, it looks so much easier to say) just seems mildly moody while all the ornithowhatever offspring seem much happier and plumper here.

Looks great, Al. I can almost smell it from here!

That's because are Oncidium's are sensitive and on the delicate side. Of course that means they wear only the finest perfume. AL
