    Default Class at Longwood Gardens

Like a child waiting for Christmas and that 'jolly old elf' coming down the chimney I have been awaiting Feb 25th with just as much anticipation. One of my very unexpected Christmas gifts was an enrollment in a one day class on orchids at Longwood Gardens. The class was composed of several lectures and workshops. Tom Miranda curator of the orchid collection at the Smithsonian Institute and popular writer and speaker on various orchid topics presented a program on Orchid Biodiversity. John Salventi a grower/speaker/writter and conservationist presented a lecture on orchid conservation and Tom Purviance did a workshop on orchid revival where we were each given three orchid seedlings to repot and then ours to take home. It was wonderful hearing all the very informative lectures and getting a refresher course on proper potting techniques and yes getting three new orchids to take home was an added bonus. What was the crowning moment of the day was the hour tour we were given of the Longwood Garden Orchid Houses which are not open to the public. There are 5 houses especially designed for the various orchids in the Longwood collection of over 3200 different kinds of orchids and a total of 9000 plants. I will post the pics in several threads. In this thread I will post the pics of the Phalaenopsis house which is kept at 65 degrees in the winter and allowed to go up to 85 degrees in the summer. I hope you enjoy these pics.

Nice photos, and sounds like quite an experience. Did you take any pictures of your new seedlings?
