ok, so here we are a year later. shelob is now in an 8" clay orchid pot, with a medium bark/fern fiber/clay pellet etc. mix with a pad of sphagnum moss at the bottom of the pot (helps plug the drains so the mix does not leak) and on the top. it keeps the bark mix dampish longer. i just took it outside to take the picture, it is grown in the south facing window still. i used stakes this time because the larger one (has 9 buds) was hitting the window. the buds are getting color, so they should open soon. this plant usually begins to flower while the new growth is maturing still, at about half grown. once you can see an inch or so of the bulb peaking through the leaf bracts, the stem should begin poking out as well. the bulb will mature along with the spike. larger growths also put out a second stem once the bulb is nearly mature. this one is a vigorous grower, there are now at least 5 growing leads. it got really bright light over the winter, and the tips are a little yellow from too much light. i have been using weak worm tea about once a month or so and am now fertilizing twice a month for summer. the way this one is growing, some bulbas are starting up while others are in flower, so i get blooms more often and not all at once.

So far I have almost killed my Shelob, but I think its making a comeback. I had terrible problems with black spots on all my oncids this last winter and was slow getting some Physan for them. The new growth on my Shelob is nice and clean, there isn't much else left of it though, so will have to watch it closely this summer so it doesn't dry out or get spotty either one. I love the flowers so much!

My daughter has the main plant that mine was a start off of in MI and it is growing and blooming quite happily. I think she has more light for it and more humidity and more space around it. I'm glad hers is doing great, if need be I'll be able to try again later.

Love this plant! I sure hope mine stages that comeback that I think it is!

i give it really high light, especially in winter, when the sun angles down lower in the sky and shines in the window further. it does appreciate some mild fertilizer, if you have anything without the salt-based stuff. i had some black-spot show up on a lot of plants over the winter, and physan'd the heck out of everything! amazing how quick bacteria can spread.

i am trying to remember to physan all new arrivals as well, i think that was the problem i ran into, a new arrival that looked otherwise very healthy 3 days later was covered in black spots. it spread rapidly to nearby plants within a few days. yikes!
