1st..am I in the correct forum? Please steer me in the right direction if I'm not.

    Anyway...
This lil cutie has been hanging at the highest point in my greenhouse with 3 others (2 yet to bloom). I've got faith in them, even though I cut a spike off before I remembered that I shouldn't.

It's beautiful! I love this little angels. Ypur blooms are wonderful. I have 6 of them, all mounted. Is this one mounted or potted? An important orchid magazine has an article on tolumnias this month.

    Hi Carmen,
I agree....they're little darlings for sure. Are any or all of your 6 blooming? We'd love a picture if they are.

All 4 of mine are mounted. I had a mounted one a couple of yrs. ago that hung on for awhile, but finally died from root rot. I found out too late that Tolumnias succumb to it easily if the base is kept too wet. Needless to say, I should have researched more before I bought it. I hated that I lost it, but you live-you learn.

Many people have beautiful ones in a little pot of large charcoal nuggets, but I don't understand how they mist/water the roots. ??

I also understand that the roots enjoy being drenched with water as long as they dry out quickly.

If I've misunderstood, will you or anyone please correct me?

    Thanks,
    Vicki

these are difficult to find locally, but i had one mailed to me from france, and it has bloomed twice. the other is newer, and i bought it in bloom, mail order also. they are nice!!!!!! and yours has great colors. i spray mine with a water bottle almost every morning and really drench it. i also spray the whole thing, not just the roots. i suspect the leaves trap water in nature, like a bromeliad, but i am not a pro botanist. i have them in little 3" treefern pots, with some loose fibers and lava, charcoal and bark etc. i hear they rot pretty easily, but no damage so far, and it is very dry here, so i have to be careful not to let them get to crinkly. i bring them inside for the winter, and they usually bloom for me in winter. the one i have had about a year and a half has rooted into the treefern pot. they can handle pretty bright light, i keep them near my sharry baby and vandas.

Vicki, certainly tolumnias like their roots to dry quickly. Some people plant them in pots with marble chips or small river stones. That's how I've bought mine, potted that way. I've mounted them after buying them in pots. I water mine daily, early in the morning, to give them plenty of time to dry before the evening. I grow them outside 24/7 in a tropical climate. These plants are mostly from the Carribbean, so they are "at home". I also fertilize " weakly weekly" with orchid fertilizer and 2-3 drops of superthrive. They are doing great! Right now I don't have any in bloom, but here are a couple of pics from previous blooms. No ID for them. Sorry about that.
