I wouldn't dare to keep one in sphagnum either! I just bought an Phal at a major box store (half price, it was done blooming) and when I took it out of the 6" green plastic pot it was in, I found that it had a 3" root ball and was just jammed into the bigger pot with sphagnum and the whole mess was sopping wet after three days at home! Fortunately the roots were still good, so I put it into proper coarse medium with bark, a little sphagnum and some coconut fiber. I'm sure I'd have lost that one if I'd left it in that mess! It is labelled though, Phal Sogo Yukidian, it should have huge white flowers when it blooms again! I'll probably have to wait until next year, but it looks nice and healthy.

Being a mini Phal. enthusiast I felt obligated to reply to this thread. I have a number of mini Phals both mounted and potted, mine are potted in clay pots and medium tree bark. During the summer out side on porches I water every day, during the winter months I water my mounts every day and the pots every other day. I grow under lights and have a humidifier running 24/7. I hold to that schedule with all my mini orchids Oncidiums, Dendrobiums
etc. all in clay pots. I also have a African root with about twelve mini plants on it, it gets misted every day during the cold months and sprayed every day during the summer outside. This has worked for me for the last eight years I have had problems before since I switched to clay pots and bark everyone seems happy. I do have to make exceptions with some of my Dens. and Catts. that like drier winters and less water.

Very nice blush pink on the inner part of the petals. Looks like it's been brushed onto the petals.

Oh oh, I found a mini Phal yesterday in Seattle, when I was visiting my father! I have to get a good picture of it, it's awesome. Its about 6" tall, including the spike, and about 4" across, has two spikes that have purple freckles on white flowers and is peloric! Awesome, never saw anything like it before.
