i have to admit i am falling in love with these little oncidiums. they are so small and take up little space, which means i can put several in the place of one large oncidium. they like a bit of sun in the morning, and very bright light, like cattleya and dendrobiums. and these come in so many different colors, a person could have a whole collection of just tolumnias. if you have one not blooming, give it lots of light. i also think they need a bit more watering than you would think after reading about them. if i let mine go too dry, they begin to shrivel up. there's not much to them, so they can wilt quickly. in the heat of summer, i really douse them and usually mist them heavily every morning year round. it does not take much to soak them well. i got a few others cheaply to try more spots on my balcony that seem to have plenty of light. and so far, they seem to handle some cold. i'm leaving them outside this year and so far they are ok. one has 2 spikes coming along even though we had some overnight lows down to 40-ish. i keep mine in very small treefern pots, they grow right into it and hold on tight.thanks for the comments, and when i get a chance to take shots in better light i will post more pictures.

In my lifetime I have probably grown well over a thousand of these. I either put them in a small clay pot or mount them. They like cattleya type light and also air movement. I grew most of the potted ones in coconut husk fiber but any mix that allows air to move through it will work. They don't like soggy roots. The best way to water it is to water every morning and have the plant dry by night. I had poor success with plastic pots because it didn't dry out fast enough. The species are from the Carribean.

I like it. Only have one Tolumnia that's never bloomed either. The bright light it gets is very good, now I'll take your advice on the watering. Thanks! AL

i think in a more humid place you really need to be careful to not overwater, but here in a desert environment it really is a struggle to keep orchids hydrated. and i really soak them with my spray bottle, not careful at all, in fact i try to get some water to slide down into the crevices of the leaves. they have small roots down there, and they naturally trap a bit of water. the only one i have not doing well does not seem to open enough to catch water the same way, and it looks like a raisin. the one catching water is growing and blooming off an on, but mostly in late fall to winter. they do basically dry by nightfall, except when i truly soak the little fern fiber pots in water, which is mostly when i know it will be warm. in winter i just mist heavily for the most part. i got a few more that are spiking, one a similar color but more yellow than red and another red/rosy one. they were 'seller's choice' but cheap. the gaga i as much as the other 2 combined, but i had to do it. i've been drooling over it for a while and was afraid i'd miss it. one thing about orchids, if you want one, get it before they are gone. i may never own a darwinara charm..... i waited too long.
