Trichocentrum Ollie Palmer (Trt. Maureen x Trt. Haematochilum)
this is my first mule ear oncidium. i got it last august as a blooming sized plant. it went from a 4" pot to a nice 6" wide shallow bowl shaped clay pot. it has some large chunks of treefern and some bark and clay pellets with pads of moss here and there on the top to keep in moisture. flowers are 1.5"x2" and scented like a fine perfume. that bare spot on the flower stem should have had 3 more flowers on a small branch but i knocked it badly during watering once. has 9 flowers now. the scent is unusual. like a mix of musk and rose perfume. maybe a bit of cinnamon. i tried to leave it outside all winter, but a particularly cold few nights in january produced some pitting to the young nearly mature growth so i brought it inside for the rest of winter. it sat in a south facing window, shaded from the sun with 70% shadecloth until the sun angled back up to not come in and hit the plants. it still gets very bright light, and i have other oncidiums there that are doing well. it quickly put out another new growth that began in late january.
Very cool bloom!
The presentation of upper petals almost similar with my Phal gigantea so cool congrats.
great color, looks like a happy plant
this is the view from above. the plant has a long rhizome that crosses the pot. they sort of almost have pseudobulbs, like the stump or beginning of one anyway. they can be hard to see under the leaves. the roots have attached to the clay.
I have a blooming sized trichocentrum carthagenense species orchid on order that should ship next week after being on order for 2 months. I hope to be able to bloom it this summer. But I have not seen the plant yet to know if there is a chance for that. I don't know what the plant itself will look like. The flowers are somewhat similar.
I can't wait for it to arrive.
Lovely colors, very eye catching.
looks cute. thanks for sharing
