Smile Tolumnia 'Red Cherry' In Bloom

After 2 years of no blooming, this Tolumnia is now on its 3rd spike since September. All fans on this guy have now bloomed. I guess it goes into growth mode after this bloom cycle completes.

Beautiful. I love Tolumnias but find them very short-lived.

The plant. The flowers are long lasting. I started growing Tolumnia, then known as equitant Oncidium in 1962, after seeing pictures of cascading sprays of Onc pulchellum. I still remember my first Tolumnia Onc Little Chickadee which I purchased from a Hawaiian vendor who used to come to Malaysia with her plants, a couple of times a year. This plant only survived .2 years. In the following years I've had scores of these beautiful orchids but none have survived for more than 2 years . Since 2007 I've stopped growing Tolumnia - can't take this love-hate relationship any more : I love them and they hate me!
