    Default various phal photos

had the weekend off so dropped by to see the folks for mother's day. snapped some pictures of my mom's phals. still grossly behind on photos (i.e. all the NY show photos) but at least these are done.

the first one is Dtps. Ever Spring Prince 'Black Eagle', her NY show acquisition (under prodding from yours truly). love it or hate it, the dark color draws attention and gets a thumbs-up from this vini paph connoisseur.

next is Phal. Chromium Emperor 'Rising Sun' AM/AOS, a clear 4" soft yellow. for some reason it seemed much yellower this year than in the past. mature plants have huge arching spikes like the white phals, except in yellow of course.

this is Phal. amabilis, one of the classic white species behind the ubiquitous hybrids. has a charm not unlike the unifoliate catt species, something that the hybrids just don't have.

Paph. sumatrana, originally picked up for a whopping 1 dollar from a society table. some clones are much more yellow but it blooms reliably every year with 2.5" yellow/white/barred star-shaped flowers.

I was at an area vendor a few years ago and ran into this Phal. Brother New Canary, intensely fragrant, and picked it up. the fragrance and overall color reminds me of the Brother Sara Gold I have.

Phal. Maki Watanabe 'Carmela', a soft "blush" pink.

    Phal. Pinlong Cardinal, a mid-sized semi-alba.

a noID spotted phal hybrid, originally from a NY Chinatown street vendor many years ago. heavy heavy substance, but the blooms are always crowded.

another noID candy-striped phal, from a mass-market specialty store. too bad there's no name because I'm impressed with its full size, clean patterning, shape, and spacing.

last, an unnamed hybrid between Chiayi Pink and amabilis. smaller blooms (2.5-3") but the plant produces branching spikes.

geepers, that is quite a selection... it's like a lolly all sorts, and there's a type for everybody... I can't quite decide which is my fave.. could be Maki Watanake or amabilis or the yellow one...
