    Default Phal. hygrochila

Yes, time for the imposter to flower again. Imposter, not what most growers would call a Phallie. Don't care, I like it.

It ( or they) used to be a genus all on their own _ so for example I saw Hygrochilus marriottiana several times, in Thailand, in March this year - here is a pic of one in the wild. Colour quite different, but apparently it is a very variable species.
Btw I have never seen one in cultivation or on offer in UK .
here is the pic - you may be surprised at how much light it must get, but this is teak forest, must get very dark in the height of the growing season with those giant leaves.

It has me bewildered how this can be a Hygrochilus & mine be a Phal I don't know Geoff. I would like a plant of this marriottiana, very nice it is. I give my plant lots of light, seems to grow well & the leaves seem to have more substance/strength than they did when I had it in more shade. It didn't flower then either !! A message there ?

In the "current" Kew checklist, these are both Phalaenopsis. It used to be Vandopsis parishiii and it's variety marriotiana, now they have been split into their own species so it's now Phal. hygrochila (formerly Vandopsis parishiii, then Hygrochilus parishii) and Phal. marriotiana (formerly Vandopsis parishii v. marriotiana, then Hygrochilus parishii v. marriotianus.) Just to muddy up the water a bit more, they were first in the Vanda family, back in the 1800's.

Very nice one Roy. Splitters and lumpers were at it many times and may be they will change it again.
