Bought it in bloom last year so my first.
Title should be Doritaenopsis Leopard Prince 1138 "Sogo" & yes i did pay about 50% more than for say my Phal Baldans Kaliedoscope but considering the awards & i really love it i did not mind..
Best thing about this spike is that it looks the same from the other side

    Hi Steve,

I have a Leopard Prince also, but with the more standard coloration:
    http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...leopard+prince

I love your two-tone coloration! The hybridizer that first registered the cross was Sogo, and there is a cultivar '1138' with your coloration. So I'd expect that yours would be rightly named:
Dtps. Leopard Prince '1138'. Sogo probably just got added to the tag, but isn't really part of the name.

Of course there is a LP cultivar 'Sogo F-611', so who knows...

Actually - what Steve has is Leopard Prince Sogo Diamond. The flower was patented and can only be "legally" obtained by buying a clone. The stunning diamond pattern can be incredibly well defined... about $60 US for a healthy, BS plant...

Well, I'm not saying exactly what Steve has, but if you search the Web you'll find Leopard Princes are pretty loosely named, and I suspect a good many of the names are incorrect.

According to the Orchidwiz database, which has the AOS records, the cross would be Dtps. Leopard Prince. The cultivar (appearing in single quotes) could be anything - they don't keep track of cultivars unless they've been awarded. A 'Sogo F-611' won an HCC/AOS in 2000. There is also a picture of the cultivar '1138' that has not been awarded, but is a dead ringer for Steve's.

    I also saw Websites showing:
    Leopard Prince 1138 'Sogo', and
Dtps. Leopard Prince ' Sogo F-1138'

These, I'm quite sure, are incorrectly named. There is no cross Dtps. Leopard Prince Sogo Diamond, but there could well be a cultivar Dtps. Leopard Prince 'Sogo Diamond'. (If there is, it hasn't been awarded by the AOS.) Cultivar '1138' does looks like Steve's.

As for patenting a cross, I think it's absurd. But hell - it's Father's Day...why not? If you sire an beautiful, witty child, why not patent him or her. You could then sell, or better yet, lease the rights to marry your offspring (or even better yet, the right to copulate with him or her) and generate a tidy income stream for your later years! Go for it dads!

Now we are getting into the minutiae of who can "name" orchids and who can't. The orchid listed as Leopard Prince 'Sogo Diamond', pretty much a ringer for Steve's plant was the grand champion Phal at the APOC 8, or 8th Asian-Pacific Orchid Congress... I don't know what ties these folks have with the hoity toity of orchid naming and registry granting.. I just know that if you like Steve's orchid, you can get a similar one from a couple of reputable nurseries.

Lord I hate taxonomy and idiot bureaucracy in the whole orchid world.

I like what I like..., Don't care what it is called... Steve, if you ever get a keiki, I'd like to figure out a way to buy it from you.....
