    Question psychopsis comparison quiz!!??!?

Finally! Two of my psys in bloom at the same time, although one is fading. For your comparison... Can you detect the differences??

On the left is Carolina Gold - a papilio x mendenhall, I think. On the right is Kahili 'Big' (it's fading, the lip is usually much fuller).

They are the same distance from the camera, the Kahili is bigger, and that is a small blossom for it, as it is busy putting out a second bloom.

Neat comparison, Diane! Thanks for the Psychopsis show!

My versteegianum had a spike of about 20" and the tip just suddenly browned and shriveled. I'm thinking in the very high temps we've had this last week the poor thing was undone.

Can I cut down above the next lower bract and hope for a branching spike?

Ah, too dry and too hot. They are really fussy when it gets hot. Don't cut. Just let it do it's thing. It will decide where it wants to sprout from. Sometimes they go from the node below, but sometimes just a few centimeters below where they died. Should happen pretty quickly if mine are an acceptable example...

Those are so pretty! Nice to see the two of the side by side for comparision. How much bigger is the Kahili usually?

    Cheers!

The Kahili is usually about 7" tall. This one was only about 6", and since the lip has started to shrivel it's only about 5.5"

It is funny, but it kinda looks like my bird, Murphy. When ever a stranger comes around, he holds his wings up a little to look bigger than he actually is. It looks like Kahili is holding up his little wings to show the Carolina Gold he is the boss.

    Cheers!

The roaring cat is quite obvious on the Kahili--really quite lion-like, with mane and everything!

Funny, but my first thought of the Kahili was a cross between a lion and a sumo wrestler with a big white belly!

    hmmm.... maybe the wine???
