    Default Mutant Mendenhall!?

I had bought 3 oncidium mendenhall, and the 2 bloomed out to be true, and this one is my mutant! I have taken it to some of my friends, and also the person I had got it from to show them, and they had nothing really to say other then it was a mutant. I have looked for it and can't really find anything like it anywhere. It is still opening up so I will have a follow up picture when it is fully open. As you can see though, it doesn't have the antenna that they normally have. It has full petals instead.

That really is strange. I wonder if all of its flowers will be like this?

    Cheers!

That is pretty weird, Aaron! Were all three from the same batch? Clones or seedlings?

All 3 were from a compot. All of the flowers on this spike have been this way. There is another spike setting, so we'll see if they are this way or the way they should be. It would be pretty wierd to have 2 different types of flowers on the same plant!

Most wierd but still very alluring.
I have had different flowers on the same spike on a peloric Phal.
Some normal , some half peloric(very weird) & some fully peloric.
I would not be surprised if most of these "mutant" plants that we get are the results of chemicals used to boost growth rate or some other attribute.

This flower is pretty when it is when it is fully open. I will update with photos. I know the person who grew this plant, and I don't think he uses any special chemicals to boost growth rate. Only Dyna grow fert, and super thrive. I'll have to email him to make sure though.

I think it looks very much like the mutation is two 'lower halfs' of the normal flowers fused together. So it should be quite attractive, albeit not normal, when it is fully open. I haven't had a mutant Psychopsis yet... knocking on wood.

Over use of Super Thrive has been mentioned in some cases of flower deformation , maybe the cause or it could be just a natural abnormality.

This is just an update pic. I don't know why the lip doesn't fully come unfurled, but it is still attractive. My little Mutant!
