Thanks Jimbo. I hope I can keep mine happy long enough to see that!

Another one to add to the list -- I love the color on that equestris. Beautiful. And you can't really complain when a small plant decides to bloom!

    Hi Jimbo,

What's the ideal culture for equestris? I have an alba that just put up several spikes (I got it this summer with spikes and keikis, that I eventually removed), but the mother plant just lost a leaf to rot, and early buds on the new spikes never developed. Another leaf is stressed, so I cut all spikes.

I'm upping air flow, and blaming the rot for the stress. But it's potted in clay and sphag and dries quickly. I can't get to water it as often as I probably should. Is it a species sensitive to moisture? How does it tolerate fertilizer?

I'll move it to plastic if that's the answer. I'm sure the upped air will help, but it's in my living space, which makes it colder for me in the winter. Is it temp sensitive? My windows aren't the warmest...

    Thanks!

    Julie

For what it's worth, mine is in s/h and is happy as a clam. I've only had it about 8 months though.

If you have any pictures of your rotted plant that would help. If you are losing the top leaves to rot, that ain't good. Phals are susseptable to crown rot, on all Phals you shouldn't mist the leaves or flowers. If you do get water in the crown use a paper towel to soak it up. Since phals have one growing point, if you rot it, it will easily die unless it shoots a basal keiki.
Equestris like a little bit drier roots, warmer temps. Yours looks healthy so good job, doing good. If it is growing and happy, thats all you really need.

try Dyna-Gro's Pro-TeKt, it's a Silicon nutritional additive, that is suppose to help with heat/cold resistance (among other things), i supplier that i frequent gave me a bottle to try, he swears by it...
