It is a nasty weed tree that happens to be a great shade tree. It is invasive and I would cut it down but I need the shade.

I would love to be able to grow phals in the trees in my yard! How much care do you have to give it Cin? Would it work for snowbirds down there?

In my yard if you live on a tree there is a live or die theory, Yes they work for snow birds that is what I did with my orchids before we moved here full time. When we got ready to leave in the spring I just attached them to the tree and hoped that they would be alive when we got back in the fall. I usually had 75% survive. I spritz them with fertilizer when I remember but other than that they are all on their own.

My orchids are one of my biggest winter in FL worries. Maybe there is hope! There MUST be a way to make this work!

Would there be a best time of year to start them out on trees?

Not really I usually slam them in the trees when they start acting up, IE: sickly and peeked. They do like the EAST sun if they can get it but they adapt.

I have just had a look out my window and looked at the Holly, the Ceanothus and the Buddleia and tried to imagine orchids flowering on them. Not a chance.

But a fantastic idea, and it now makes me even more jealous. Am going to be miserable all weekend now...

I'm with you Kerry...out my window is about 8 inches of new snow on the trees w/leaf buds sort of sticking out from underneath. Orchids? Right.

    Oh well....

Cool bloom Cin!! Thanks for sharing!

Orchids growing in trees definitely has an exotic feel. We're past the little snow we did get, but 40's and low 50's during the day still isn't all that warm. I don't even put my orchids on the porch in the summer. I used to, but they didn't like the changing conditions. It's much easier to keep things steady on the windowsill.

Now Christian could mount some orchids on that really cool cat tree he built in his house, but they might end up cat toys or cat food!
