This is so spectacular, that you have a vivarium and blooming orchids inside! You've created your own little plant world, so to speak. That is SO fantastic! Congratulations!

First P: Thank you very much

Last 2 P's: He is very much terrorising his big brother and has a fondness of the windowsills filled with orchids.. No real disasters yet - but he has managed to throw both a phal with seed pod and zygo with a very mature new growth on the ground. Luckily I had supported the seedpod so it didn't suffer (I think) The zyg got a few bruises but it will live and hopefully send out a spike soon.

It is growing in my vivarium og paludarium to be correct - I believe that vivariums simulate an ecosystem while paludariums are rainforest "terrariums" (I didn't do any eco system - just mounted all the orchids I had that would fit ) - anyways I just got it build and mouted this guy while he was in bud, luckily they didn't blast but I was just to impatient

Thank you very much And it really is fantastic! I would recomend it to everyone! I find myself passing by to take a glance many many times a day and the smell of that humid environment when you open the door really takes you to the rainforest - can't wait till some of the fragrant chids start blooming.
Oh almost forgot the best thing: You get to buy LOTS and LOTS of miniatures! You won't believe how many will fit in such a glass box at least when it's 6 feet tall

As with any hybrid, tindo, I suspect it is more of a "crap shoot" as to whose coloration comes through and how much of it.

Sure it couldn't be a hybrid, Julie?

Mine has the yellow callus & purple lip [see my post for any who are curious] but I just assumed mine was a cross [it was also called parishii lobbii. I rather suspect in the case of mine that it is truly a hybrid.

    So what have we got...

Christian had a tag that mentions lobbii and parishii, and we know the species have been confused for over a century, with many so-called "parishii" really lobbii. I'd say it's pretty safe to bet that Christian's is either the lobbii species, the parishii species, or a primary hybrid between the two.

Differentiators between the flowers of the two species are:

Parishii lip: the lip color is wine; the color is solid, exept for a white streak up the middle; the lip shape is flatter along the bottom edge.

Lobbii lip: the lip color is brown or yellow; there's a distinct white or yellow stripe up the middle of the lip, and at the right and left edges; the bottom edge of the lip is very rounded.

Parishii callus: the callus of both species is yellow, but in parishii it's a bit more pointed and angles back.

Lobbii callus: less pointed, although sometimes moreso, and tends to angle forward.

Parishii other: the area at the base of the column, just above the callus, is white with numerous dark-maroon spots.

Lobbii other: this same area is yellow with two prominent brown spots (sometimes there are a few more spots.)

Compare photos of both phalaenopsis species (click to enlarge each), and see if you can see the different traits I described:

    Lobbii: Phalaenopsis lobbii

    Parishii: Phalaenopsis parishii

Lobbii x parishii: Phalaenopsis Lovely Kid

Just from the lip on Pavel's Phal you can see both the wine color of parishii and the striping of lobbii, so I'm convinced that's a primary hybrid. Christian's doesn't show any lobbii influence at all, so I'd say parishii species. Clint's photo shows lobbii striping on the lip. There could be parishii influence in that area above the callus, but it's tough to see from the angle of the picture.

That definetly settles it: Mine's a parishii. It matches all the characteristics that McAll-knowing describes eventhough the white streak on the lip isn't distinct.

I think the indistinctness of the lip's white streak favors parishii more than lobbii.

And I'm less all-knowing and more owner of a few very good orchid books.

Interesting with the Lovely Kid pic, that the lip on that particular individual shows some yellow/tanning of the lip along the edges, but no stripe to speak of down the middle.

my Lovely Kid is nicer LOL

The lip on Christian's looked more like parishii to me both in shape & witht he richness of the coloration. But never hurts to 'challenge' the issue & give Julie a chance to 'earn her keep'
