    Default Phal. parishii

    First bloomer in my vivarium

WHen I bought it the tag said "phal. parishii lobbii", but they are two seperate species right?? I can't quite figure it out When I google them both I see that this one looks mostly like parishii.. I got it from a very well renowned dealer, so I don't suspect that he messed the tag up .. is there a phal. parishii var. lobbii?

    Hi Christian,

Phals parishii and lobbii have long been confused. The name Phal parishii var. lobbii dates back to 1870, but in fact described the lobbii species. Parishii haven't been introduced into cultivation until just the last few years. Many of the older so-called parishii hybrids were actually made with lobbii species.

Your beauty is unmistakeably parishii, however. The shape and fully colored lip are one indication. The other is the callus shape that's the yellow spotted thingie just above the serpent tongue. It's a telltale differentiator.

Clint's picture has very strong lobbii influence, and could be pure lobbii. Yours is absolutely pure parishii.

Thank you very much for clarifying McJ! I'll have to write the dealer and ask him why he writes lobbii on those tags then...

    No problems, Christian!

He likely doesn't know. The info I provided was from Eric Christenson's Phalaenopsis - A Monograph, should he be interested in my source.

    Beautiful -- by any name.

And where is it growing? THe background looks very beautiful and interesting, almost like you have it ready for a show.

Thanks for the Info McJulie! I only new that parishii had a blueish/purplish lip, while lobbii was yellowish/brownish. I have no idea what a hybrid would look like.
