    Default Phal wilsonii??

This is being sold as Phal wilsonii, but some ppl argue that it maybe Phal honghenense. I looked at the pic available on the internet and they look the same to me.

I have several of this plant and some flowers are slightly lighter than others. Can anyone help me clarify the confusion? Julie??

Whichever one it is, it's very nice.

I am not going to even attempt to think I could give you an answer. Let's see what McOrchidGuru or any other encyclopaedic knowledgeable ones out there have to say...

    Very nice species Phalaenopsis, Tanya!

These two species are very similar, and confusion is worsened by the fact that many P. honghenensis exported from China are mislabeled as wilsonii.

Honghenensis has a short, few-flowered spike, while wilsonii has a long multi-flowered spike with 10-15 flowers. (Wilsonii has the longest flower spikes in this section of Phal.)

Wilsonii has a slight "V" notch at the tip of the lip, whereas the lip on honghenensis is rounded. Christenson does write that honghenensis' lip can appear notched, however. Because of the big bump in the middle of the lip (he uses fancy scientific terms to describe it) and the downward curving at the tip, the tip can appear notched, when in fact it's rounded if you pushed it out flat.

That's not a lot to go on, Tanya, and I can't tell from your pictures about the lip or the length of the inflorescence. Here are some more pictures to look at, but there's no guarantee all of these are correctly labeled!

    Phalaenopsis honghenensis

    Phalaenopsis wilsonii

    Hope that helps!

Those links are great - I especially like that the pages contain additional links to primary hybrids. What a great website.

Thank you, Julie. Just as I was hoping for, you simplified those mind boggling fancy terms for me.

I forgot to mention that they are fragrant. Its a jasminy, spicy kind of fragrance.

Becky, I don't have a greenhouse and you can easily grow this one on your windowsill. Its very compact plant. Mine are growing in group on one mount.

*change the tag (again)to P honghenensis*

Glad that helped, Tanya! And trust me...lol, I had to pull out the dictionary a few times to translate the botanical gobblety-gook!
