    The giant thick bamboo is best for this purpose. They last for years.
    When we used to cut hardwood bamboo for assorted art projects back home, we used a 3-foot long 1" diameter pipe and drive it trough the segment walls with a hammer to punch it through.
    I'm not sure of the proper term either. We just called it "bukoh" in Tagalog which roughly translates to "stub".
