Oh No! Another paph head! Good looking orchid....

I notice some cicadia damage to the tree in the background....they almost killed our dogwoods! I am glad they are gone for anothe 17 years!

Thanks everyone! I promise to post a pic of the flowers....

Gilda, what is cicadia? I had to go look out my window at the tree. I hadn't even noticed it! Well, it's not an orchid after all.... DH, get out the saw!!

They are what people call 17 year locusts, but they are not locusts. Horrible looking creatures though ..with red eyes! About 2 1/2 inches long.

They emerge from the ground after 17 years and leave their tan colored shells attached to trees and bushes. They proceed to mate and then "sting" the ends of trees to lay their eggs for the next generation (Which kills the end of the tree or bush)..

....they make a horrible noise when mating...not like a jar fly...it is more like a constant drone...They emerged here the end of May and are gone now , thankfully! They do not bite or sting..eat no vegetation while mating and then they die! The eggs form into larvae where they live on roots underground till they emerge 17 years later!

Some areas were affected worse than others...It was all over the news and the internet when they started emerging...you must have been online ordering orchids!

Oh, man, those are some nasty sounding critters! Fortunately, DH diagnosised our tree with a broken branch and cut it off. Glad those things didn't visit me!

Orchid shopping? Me?? Now why would you think that?
