Lower temps and higher light will both increase anthocyanin (reddish/purple) pigment in various orchids. I have not heard about light levels and phrag flower pigmentation, but I have heard that besseae & hybrids that bloom in the winter (low temps) tend to have darker red flowers.

    Interesting you guys!
I wonder what mine will turn out like. Granted it has only been here a week, but it has been warmer and sunnier down here lately than where Pete is. Wonder if it will make a difference? My catts and phal (the one with now TWO new roots AND leaves) are all reddish from the sun. My phal is a white one too...makes me think they are happy.

I'm not sure how much of a difference light and/or temps make. I try to alter light levels based on flower color--browns & reds get a little more light in bud. But then again, it's hard to compare unless you were to say, have a ton of plants.

The flower also looks smaller which means the spike must be nearing its end. I still see another bud protruding and it may be the last one.

Heather, both the spikes have been in bloom for quite sometime and one of them (don't remember which one) has been in bloom for almost a year! I have also noticed the flowers tend to be darker when the plants are outside or directly under the HPS system.

It rained last night and here's a pic of the Inca Embers bloom still wet from the rain. You can see another bud right behind the flower.

    Very beautiful!
Love the water droplets. Mine has that "ready to pop" look about it today and another bud behind as well.

Hey, I think my St. Peter is on the last bloom! I suppose it couldn't go forever, but 6 blooms since February is pretty good. I'm ready to repot it though, so not too sad!

I wonder how yours will turn out. Mine was outside, so probably the flower came out darker. Yours may look different but what do I know, I'm color deficient.
