Count the beans,

I mean plants in this compot. Guess the number of Paph. charlesworthii ('Half & Half' x 'Hidden Surprise'). Both of the parents of these cuties are 50% alba so there is a chance that each of these will produce alba flowers. Well, I know most of them are not because the alba ones do not have the characteristic redish markings at the base of the plants and I have only seen one seedling that does not have this marking, but at least there is one.

OK, I have been thinking if there should be a prize for this (I know, OF COURSE there should be, right? ), but I do not EVEN know how I would manage this. I definately do not know how many there are (Do YOU?!) and I don't know when I will pot these out in order to get a good count. I guess that is a follow up question: WHEN to repot?

Anyway, when I do pot them out and IF I remember this I will have to see what I have at that time to send off. I know what I would send now, but who know when it finally happens.

I know maybe I should post my barbigerum compot as well and whoever guesses BOTH counts wins?

Repot now, Steven - that's a crowded compot with big seedlings!

They can go into small pots individually at this point, and they'll do fine. Just ease the light levels up gently. They'll be a bit stressed after potting out of compot. But if you hold them any longer, you'll have an interwoven root mat that's hard to untangle without breaking roots.

Yeah, they are getting kinda big. I did not expect such large plants.

I just thought of a tie breaker question: Now, I know I have mentioned that I have seen one (possibly), but how many albas are in there?

I could possibly figure this out for you using the Punnett square if someone can look up and tell me if the alba in each of the parents of the cross is a dominant or recessive trait. If alba is the dominant trait in both parents then 3/4 of the total will have the dominant trait and 1/4 of the total will carry the recessive trait. If alba is the recessive trait, then the opposite is true. If one parent is alba dominant and the other is alba recessive, then it is a 50% chance that half of the seedlings will be alba and 50% chance that half will not. My guess is that it is recessive in both parents and therefore only 1/4 of the plants will be alba. So with my guess... I am going to say 5 plants will be alba. --But what the heck do I know! I am terrible at math, so I am just guessing. LOL!
