I just found it. I have never seen it before like this. I had to search for 'rock wool orchids' to get it. It is fairly cheap. Thanks.

    Cheers,

Bruce I did not use it as a bottom layer but in the mix

Are you familiar with EpiWeb? That is another man made product I have been experimenting with

Might the sponge mixture be a low cost alternative to sphagnum moss, used by the breeder for shipping purposes? Over time, I would expect the sponge to compete with the root for moisture. Moshi, assuming he doesn't just want to sell potting material, what does your supplier recommend? Joe

quality sphag is getting more difficult to obtain and at a high price. I am not surprised that commercial growers are looking for alternatives.

    Hi...
I must say that the roots are doing fine and the plants are in perfect condition...
There is both natural (tender and brittle) and synthetic (very flexible) spong in the mix...

Here is a picture of the supplyer's nursery As you can see phals are planted in the sponge/charcoal/clay directly after deflasking... So sponge is added just to increase the water capacity...
Sorry about the pic... Its made with paint!... I'm posting this from our university and I dont have access to PS...
I'll post a picture of my plants as soon as possible...

This forum is so neat. Here I am asking an orchid collector in Iran questions. The picture is great. Those seedlings look very healthy too. Did your supplier deflask, compot and then plant all those? And, what do you do at the university???

I am surprised they use natural sponge. I would be concerned about the salt residue.

I dont know about their deflasking program but I'll sure ask...
I study Plant protection (Entomology and Plant pathology, B.s)...
About the salt residue... I'm concerned too... All those evaporating process leaves lots of crystals...
Another problem comes from the roots... They grow into the sponge and become troublesome while repotting... Removing them might damage the roots...
