Paint works...but you might want to consider a marine type of paint or a urethane lacquer to seal the wood and end grain because with repeated water, especially with the end grain of the plywood, it will peel and the plywood resin will swell causing the laminate of the plywood to separate. To get the desired depth of any of the shelves you could always cantilever out with 1 x 4's attaching them with small lag screws to the inside of the stringer and extending back to the rear support legs... you could have a bottom shelf that extended forward 20" or whatever you would want. Using treated wood saves a lot of maintainence down the road.... I realize you've made an investment in what you have so go for .... it will work and and your chids will love you for it!

Well, I finished and put my orchids out yesterday!! Unfortunately, while I was putting the last couple grommets on the nice curtain for the "door", the tool got stuck....so I was using a knife to try to pry the tool off of the grommet, it slipped, and slit my finger open. The second it happen I threw the curtain away from me so I wouldn't get any blood on it. The blood was pouring out though, it was all over my entire hand and running down my arm. So now, there's a bunch of blood splatters on the curtain.....I guess I'll leave it to remind me how hard I worked to make this shade house for the orchids!
I put the community pots out there also and a spider decided to live in one of them. I left him there because I figured he would eat bugs that might try to hurt my baby orchids. Was I right? Or will he hurt my babies in any way? Should I remove him?

Thank you for all the information bikerdoc. And yes, I really wish I would have bought treated wood =/
