    Default My new shade house

I'm currently in the process of building a shade house for my orchids! I'm using pvc for the frame, a tan shade cloth, and wood & a metal netting for the stand. The frame is built and surprisingly sturdy. Today I cut the shade cloth to the sizes I need and put the grommets on (one of my orchids joined me outside while I did this). Hopefully tomorrow I'll cut the wood and netting and build my stand!
The shade house isn't that big because I only have about 16 orchids right now...but I know I'll need a much bigger one in the future.
    It measures 6'h x5'w x4'd

I wish my new shadehouse was so simple.
I picked it up from the manufacturer today and it filled the back of my ute (pick-up) with rolls of 70% green shade cloth and cut sheets of weldmesh
The finished structure, if I read the plans correctly, will be 6m x 4.424m and the pile of bits is scary.
Luckily, my next door neighbour is a retired builder who owes me a few. Guess who I am visiting tomorrow with a set of plans in my hand?
I don't want to scare you but to rule-of-thumb for shadehouses seems to be, "work out the size you need, double it and it will still be too small."

Sounds like one I just built....http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...mmer-home.html

I tried to publish, "How I Did It", but even with Bruce's expert help I just couldn't get the pictures where I wanted them... I must be mentally compromised!!!!!!!

So where are the "In progress construction pictures?"

Here are my "In progress construction pictures"
    1. The trench to secure the structure so it doesn't blow away on a windy day. 2. It's in the ground and secure. The top and side pieces of shade cloth are on.
    3. The stand is built...the shade cloth is on the wrong side of the pipe and I need to reattach it.
    4. A better look at the stand.
The stand isn't quite done. I need to screw on 4 more pieces and then put the wire netting on. I did all the measuring, cutting, and building for this entire project....I'm quite proud of myself and how it's coming along!
    The shade house measures 6'H x 5'W x 4'D
The stand is 4'H x 4'W x 4'D The bottom is 18" and the upper three are 10"

Nice job... just a thought about your strand. I can't tell from the pics but unless that plywood is CDX exterior grade, it will degrade and you'll be back to construction. You can purchase pre-cut stair stringers that are 2 x 4 by 3 or 4 stairs made of treated wood. Then some 2 x 4's as legs and bracing and a 1 x 4 across the riser to keep the plants from falling backwards and some 1/4" mesh wire..... just a thought

CLS - that is awesome! Congratulations to you.

Howard, using a stair runner like that is a good idea. Thanks!

    Cheers,

It's not treated wood, but I was planning on painting it. And the stair runner is a great idea, but I didn't want to use it because I wanted the bottom one to be 18". I have a 2x4 in each corner and one across the bottom of each "step". Today I'm putting the 2x4 going across the middle kind of joining the two steps and giving more support. The little squares in the wire mesh/netting/idk that I have are 1/2"x1/2"

Looks great! Would love to see it with your plants!

Now if I could only figure out how to change my Icon on here I'd attempt a shade house hehe

    All the best!
