Default "outside the box" tools, methods, etc.

I thought it might make an interesting thread to make a list of unconventional tools, methods, and otherwise that orchid growers might use in their hobby...for instance, I use a dental pick to get into all those tight spots to pull out old media. I have seen others suggest using household chemicals to combat pests and fungus. Do any of you use anything around the home that someone may have never thought of?

I use the cups from things like Nyquil to make BABY orchid pots.

Thanks for the response Jonada! I figured that not too many people would be interested in this thread, but it was worth a go to help out those "newbie" orchid growers who might be hindered by lack of supplies/finances/etc. You must have been dealing with some tiny little buggers to be resourcing a dosing cup!

Some were small plants from a flask and some are a bit larger but with little root left. Works pretty well.

Thumbs up Making My Own Pots

I included a few photos of some of the pots that I have made out of plastic bottles. The green one is a 3-liter off brand Ginger Ale bottle, the smaller clear bottles are from sport drinks. Those were for my Den. & Phal.keikis. The clear bottle next to the green one, was a cider vinager bottle. I drill drainage holes 6-8 in the bottom and cut vent slits in the body of the pot. I know that DelandDad (Pete) had addressed this in a older post some where about re-using plastic bottles to grow in. Have Fun,Rich

i like to use popsicle sticks for labels as i confess, i am a bit of a greenie.......these soon break down, which is no problem as they are soo cheap, and the orchids also love to grow up them. I also used them for mounting smaller orchids from the oncidium and dendrobium alliances, as well as the epidendrum polybulbon.

I use a soldering iron to make more holes in my pots or when making a s/h pot from a
    container of sorts...

Try using wire suet cages (for birds) to hold plants. They have their own hanger and many times you can replace the bark without disturbing the plant.....

I forgot, I use the top (slotted) portion of the broiler pan from an old oven for a rack to keep those in small pots from falling through shelving.
