    Default Thinking about a greenhouse

I'm thinking about a greenhouse but don't know where to start. Ii don't know much about them and my search on this forum didn't provide much info. The kits listed on the net look pretty good, but do they really do the job? I'm in Florida so I would guess I don't have to worry about snow, but maybe hurricanes. i would think 8x 12 would work but I'm sure bigger is better. Please allow me your thoughts on what you did to get your greenhouse. and points I should consider.

    Hi Dave,

Good for you!! Yes, bigger is better, but it will cost more to heat and cool. There are several threads here in the forum that discuss different needs for greenhouses. I am glad to see this question come up again. I look forward to the responses too.

    Cheers,
    BD

I am no expert on anything, but I overheard one of the proffesors at the Iowa State University horticulture building speaking about green house construction. He was suggesting a minimum height of 16 feet for proper air circulation and radiant floor heating (those plastic hoses with hot water running through them) for most efficient heat in Iowa. Seems to me, you would need to worry about cooling and shade in Florida.

I've checked around and there doesn't seem to be anyone that builds greenhouses. It looks like a kit may be my only option but I'm in a deed restricted community and the city requires a permit. I guess I'll have to jump through hoops to satisfy them unless one of you have a betterr suggestion. The kits all claim they are easy to handle, and set up.

If you have an orchid society near you, you might go to a meeting or two and ask around..I bet many of them have gone thru the process and may be able to give you pointers. One of my friends at our OS told me that we do an annual greenhouse tour, an afternoon where several members will open their greenhouses so folks can look at the different types & ask questions about the plants or the greenhouses. He said it was very useful to him when he was deciding what to build. He ended up building from a kit after he saw & liked it at another members.

Thanks for the good advice. I attended a potting party today with some of the members of the local society and got good tips from them. None of the members that were there have greenhouses, due mainly to deed restrictons, but they provided great info on how to use my grow space, sunlight levels, watering, and fertilzation.

    Hi Dave,

What are you trying to accomplish with the greenhouse? The dimensions and construction materials would largely depend on your greenhouse's primary role.
Will it be for summer/winter protection or humidity control? Or perhaps to keep critters out?

What is the climate like in your growing area?
If you don't have cold winters, you might not need a complete greenhouse and a shade house/slat house might work better for you.
In fact, if you have warm and humid weather all year a greenhouse might end up being a liability.

When dealing with deed restrictions, sometimes it's a matter of what you call it. Have you considered adding a screened porch to your home?

The classic greenhouse in Florida is hard to grow in. And a small one is even worse. The heat is hard on plants and even harder to try and dissipate for the average backyard grower. I would suggest a shadehouse for as far south as you are. I had issues with my HOA but was able to get the go-ahead on a screened room. --- vendor information removed - see faqs on posting ---- have a screen room company put one in for not much money. Add polycarbonate roof panels and there you go! They are easy to button up for winter.
