Hi I am so glad I came along this article. I now foliar feed all my orchids and they and look so good. I do beleive the natural habitat would have in it's enviroment many minerals in the air in the dewy parts of the day that the leaves tend to absorb. I think of how orchids do live in the wild as best as I can understand. And then try to simuate and emulate whatever I can do at home .
By doing this I have kept my orchids alive and healthier then ever before. So Foliar for me is a boon, I got wonderful results with my young Cymbium's first winter bloom this last winter due to this. Why the controvesy humm?, why argue do do it if you like it, and it is not for you then don't. Some balance here and common sense makes for happier orchids and their keepers.

I am a foliar feeder as well. as always early in the day and make sure of air circulation. I have great results with this and do it about 2 times a month. My lipstick plant loves it and gives me the nicest blooms after.

Jeff - Epson salts is Magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a needed nutrient for plants. If you do a search on the 'net, you can read about the benefits and how to apply. While you are looking also search for Potassium nitrate (KNO3).
I use them both as a spray. Several benefits...one being I use them in preparation for the winter months.

I have heard that spraying epsom salts once a month is a good idea and I have been trying that. So far everything looks pretty good.

I've been foliar feeding my orchids for about 8 years and it's always worked well for me. I grow outdoors. I probably wouldn't do it if I grew my orchids indoors because it could get pretty messy. I've read many of the same articles that the previous posters refered to. Experiments have proven that orchids can take up nutrients through their leaves.
