Ha, Al! I'm glad the mystery was solved. I only have experience with EC as a home air conditioner when I lived in high desert Colorado, but ending at 20% rh after it ran sounded to me like it was malfunctioning. I remember sitting in front of our window unit and my clothes would get damp like I'd been jogging in a morning fog. All our visitors from the humid Midwest were always baffled that you could cool a house by pumping it full of humidity.
Your EC won't function properly if you limit the air exchange. Your orchids will also appreciate the constant freshening. I would trade a few degrees of temperature to save humidity. Unless you're growing masdies, etc. you shouldn't need to keep it in the 75-80 range. It's too bad they don't have humidity recapture devices for exhausts like the boxes that recirculate the heat from your dryer vent. If you put up more shade cloth to help with cooling, are you going to get enough light on a northern exposure?
I hope to move back to a drier clime someday, so keep us posted on how your EC works as it gets hotter outside--I'll need to know these things when I get back to the mountains.

Ha Cassie; I agree with you on your reference to humidity versus cooler temperatures. Right now set at 86 degrees (north gass exposure) the cooler came on this afternoon about 1 P.M. It was 79 degrees F. on the south back wall at this time where most of the orchids are. This summer even if I keep it 5 to 10 degrees below 90 to 95 degrees F (That's back wall temp.), I think it will be worth it. the recovery time for the humidity to top 50% to 55% was about 7 to 9 minutes today once the EV went off at 83 degrees F. (north glass). The humidity continued up from there. Things WILL change as the seasons progress and I will try to make a study of it and let you know. Thanks! AL

A friend of mine has a fairly big Port-A-Cool interior evaproative cooler and it works great....his RH is higher but the greatest benefit is the cooler temps in the greenhouse...plants are doing MUCH better when he keeps the temp below 90 during the summer. I agree that you should use an interior model instead of bringing dry hot air in from outside
