    LED huh? you might have a get a heat source in that case...LEDs dont give off much heat...i havent shopped much for them but dont they only come in blue and red spectrum...its very annoying to the eyes.........I made my own out of a 55 gallon fish tank that i got for free.. i have around 30 orchids in it..lol...mostly small orchid species some mounted and some in pots....the growth is crowded but mainly cause the roots are going crazy and growing everywhere..haha

    Thread on my orchid tank that i will update from time to time

    I haven't been on here for a long time but just saw this thread. I bought an Orchidarium about 6 years ago and did modify it a bit. I agree with the others, if you are wanting to grow warm growing orchids in it you would probably need the heat from the lights. I didn't have a choice on the style of lights that came with mine and I am considering changing them. They came with three fixtures of two each 55 Watt 4 Pin 2G11 CFL, that is 6 bulbs to replace on an annual basis if you want to keep the lighting strong, and at about $20 per bulb the cost adds up quickly so I am thinking of switching to a fixture of T5's, which I use for other orchids already and the cost of bulb replacement is much cheaper if I buy them by the case. Anyways, let me know what questions you have and if you would like to know where I got mine from you can PM me, I am not sure if I am allowed to say here where I got it from.

    Then you have additional research to do and issues to face.

    Last I heard, LEDs are still not a good option -- ESPECIALLY if you plan on having the tank where you will see it regularly. I say this based on commercial plant growers I know who looked into LEDs extensively before making a decision to go with them in their commercial area only. The issues boil down to the following:

    Many of the LEDs do not provide light of the correct intensity nor of the correct spectrum for plant growth and blooming. Of those that do provide desireable intensities, plants much be placed within a couple inches of the LED lamps. To get the required spectrum, you will need red LED and blue LED lamps. The resulting light will be PURPLE. Which means by the light of the lamps, you plants will typically appear black.

    A grower I know who, as I mentioned earlier, does use this in his commercial grow area:
    1) is growing primarily low to intermediate light plants;
    2) only uses this in the commercial area because he finds viewing everything under such light rather unpleasant;
    3) and when checking on the plants still has regular white lights he turns on so he can see the plants as they normally appear.
