    Unhappy Winter in Florida?

As the temp. slowly goes down, im just now starting to panick. This will be my first winter with orchids. Right now they are all outside enjoying the weather, but being right on Lake Okeechobee (which means drop in temp, more wind etc.) I worry about my orchids. Bringing them inside is not an option at this point in time. Our average low is around 51 degrees, and our record lows can be around 20 degrees. I was just wondering what other floridians are planning to do, and does anyone have a suggestion? I was thinking of building a wooden structure that I can attach thick plastic to and then just slide it over my shelves. i just dont know how well it would work.

Hi , 20 would be a problem but 51 is not , We talked about moving to Fl. I thought I would make a frame of some sort PVC or ? and put the plastic over it along with an electric heater inside . I will PM. you with a link to a site with a lot of Fl growing info . Gin

21 does seem rather cold... didn't realise Florida got temps that low!

As far as 'building' a winter home for the orchids, I recently went to another grower's home and saw that he had basically a big wooden frame, 2m wide, 1 meter deep and 2 m high. This was covered by plastic. He uses a light bulb surrounded by a tin and this apparently keeps the temps to around 50 fahrenheit even though temps outside is around freezing, ie 32 fahrenheit.

So I guess the moral of the story is, it doesn't need to be fancy or anything but it is possible to make a temporary winter home for our orchids.

    cheers

Hi, I'm up on the gulf in NWF and the temp is down to 25 now, 22 last night. All my 'chids are in the house. I sympathize with you. This has been the longest and lowest cold spell since the 80's. I don't think plastic is going to cut it if the temps go to the 20's, you would definitely need some supplemental heat.

My mom is just around the corner in Palm City and was complaining about how hard it is to heat with electric heat. While I feel for her at 84 years young, I had to let her know that the thermometer may stop at 6F up here in Michigan tonight!!!! And with windchills... who knows!!!!

I brought everything in spike or bloom inside.(about 20), everything else I put in a makeshift greenhouse,(Solex on south, patio door east, with an electric heater). So far I've kept it above 70. I'm waiting on some chids from Michigan, but he's afraid to ship them. I said, "No rush".

Yes, I have several of his orchids, as well as dwarf banana, orange & lemon. I think the bananas "caught a little cold", the other night, but they are inside now. I may lose a couple of bottom leaves. It got down to 32, and I was going to bring them in the next day.
