I did that too until my timer quit timing. I bought another timer and it wouldn't time reliably either. I gave up.

I say it is true. I had my orchids under lights for 18 hours for 2 months. I switched them over to 12 hours and I got spikes on many plants. I have my plants spend the summer outside. I bring them in and put them under lights before the daylight savings time. This caused a few of my plants to not bloom. Switching the lights to 12 hours got them to bloom!

Now when I change the lights back to 18 hours a day or maybe 16 I bet the summer bloomers will bloom and spike. So Yes I think it is best to allow the plants to experience that change in light. Plants like to know when it is time to grow and when it is time to bloom lighting will help them know when to do what.

    Try it.
