    I...er...a...

I've followed suit. I picked up a terrarium today, with fogger, broad-spectrum light, driftwood and humidity/temp meter.

I'm testing it out before the plants go in, but I'm also getting some cute little minis. I'm leaning towards free-flowering ones, which the minis do more often than the maxis. I've a photo, but no time to post it tonight. Sort of the "before".

Oh my God - what have I done???

McC, LOL, you are totally out of control! In a nice way, of course! I thought you weren't into minis?!

    Default Peanut would be proud!

Peanut would actually be proud if I had some reptiles living in this thing, but right now I'm thinking chids, and not worrying about more mouths to feed!

My attempt at windowsill Masds is struggling - humidity just isn't the same as watering more frequently. And, some mini species have fallen into my lap that want higher humidity. And, I've a flask of Phals coming this week that will need to damp off, or harden, in a moist environment. And, I've a lovely Catt species that is having a bit of a root crisis that is, none! that's undergoing a spahg & pot treatment, but really requires high humidity for the plant to survive.

So a terrarium of some sort sounded like a not bad idea. I don't need more projects in my life right now, but some of the reptile terrariums that Exo-Terra makes seemed perfect for my needs - and way cheaper than aquariums! Front doors on a glass terrarium, ventilation, background fake rock, screened top.

I was going to go for a small one, but remembered all that sage greenhouse advice Diane and others have received about build it big! You'll expand to use the space.

I got an 18" square footprint that's 24" tall. The fogger is amazing. It spews fog and after a couple of hours the humidity inside, even with 2 sq. feet of open venting on top, was 97%! The fogger is fussy and I'll be working on that. As well as ground material and how to cover the styrofoam faux rock backing. I bought several pieces of driftwood for mounts. And an aquarium hood and light. It's 24" and is wider than the terrarium, so the jury's not in on that yet. I have a broad spectrum bulb for it, and it throws good light near the top of the terrarium - I can mount more light loving critters higher up and the more shade loving guys lower down.

It's a fun project. Harry and Andy Phillips, noted species growers, gave me all sorts of tips and ideas this evening. I know this is obsessive overdrive, but I'm having fun!

    Julie,

I was eyeing on this one for a long time already, but finally decided to go with the 20 gallon fish tank. Very good choice, you sure have a lot of fun.

yes...but I do want to have something to id the plants eventually....so I'm looking for something small and unobtrusive at the moment to swap out with.

Julie, what kind of light you are going to use. I think 24" fluorecent tubes are not strong enough, especially for 18" tall tarrarium, CFL might work better.

    Hi Qing,

I haven't swapped the fluorescent bulb for the broad spectrum bulb yet, so I expect these numbers will improve, but with the the plain old bulb in there, I'm measuring 2,000 foot candles 2/3 of the way up the tank, 1,000 fc half way up, and 500 fc near the base (it's 2 feet high).

If you consider total lumens (that is the foot candles delivered over time) that's pretty good light. I'll leave the light on to match daylight hours. I won't be trying to grow any high-light Dends or Catts, but I think I'm fine for the lower light guys.

I'm going to be measuring temp and humidity while I get it better set up, before I move the residents in, but I like the idea of leaving some free ground space for 'projects.' That is, the rootless Catt I'm trying to rescue, or a compot of seedlings just coming out of flask. The high humidity environment is priceless for things like this!

The existing plants I want to place in there include:
    Meiracyllium wendlandii
    Sophronitis coccinea var. lobbii
Masd. Peach Fuzz (veitchiana x constricta)
    Masd. infracta
    Mediocalcar decoratum
and possibly my Neofinetias and some of my mini Phals.

The ones I'm considering buying are:
    Haraella odorata
    Dend. lipidum
    Drac. sodiroi
    Masd. schroederiana
    Pleuro. ruscifolia
    Pleuro. truncata

    Default WOW!

    Julie,

You are quite handy . Imagine how many little pleuros you could fit in there! I would be interested to see a picture when you get it, "all decked out".
