Yes! Those things get heavy. I have back problems so I don't take a camera anymore every day as I used to (when I had a small Canon A80, great point-and-shoot camera! It's broken though, I should get it fixed), plus I am afraid somebody will steal it so... yeah xD. I usually carry two lens so it's even heavier then. I'm grateful they aren't what they used to be and now they are mostly plastic (remember those big metal lenses?! I own some but I can't find my grandfather's old AMAZING film camera).

I wonder how often " I have back problems" and " I am/used to be a serious photographer" go together ? At one time it was two Nikon bodies, half a oden prime lenses - couldn't have a zoom, flash, delayed action release, tripod, etc etc....

Stick to orchids and a pocket compact ?

I'm looking at an Olympus 'tough' stylus 6020-14mp waterproof so I can mount it to my surfboard, 2 macro menus, pretty much indestructable. 5x optical zoom...tried one out and it was really sweet-in camera menus for everything and really not much money.

Made the plunge and bought a Canon EOS Rebel XS - I have a Canon power shot. I went back and forth between a Nikon and the Canon. Finally, decided on the Canon as they offered a 2nd lense and bunch of other stuff for just tiny bit over the asking price of the camera.
I have no idea on using it so I might be asking questions

Good buy Cathy. It's always a toss up between Canon and Nikon. I use Nikon myself because I've been using the Nikon system lenses for close to 40 years. You should see my my eldest son( Canon ) and youngest (Nikon) son when they get together to 'discuss' the merits of each system! BTW both are OK photographers. In case you are interested you can view some of the youngest's photos on photokit@blogspot.com

Thanks Cathy. He'll be going to Japan in mid Sept. BTW he passed on his Nikon 200 to me when he bought his new Nikon 7000 and now I have 2 DSLRs.

Here's father and sons bonding through a shared hobby - photography and the outdoors. These pictures were taken in Hong Kong. Poor mum has to tag along.

Re the above photos . I'm not in the pics. In the pics the big one is the eldest son and the little one is the youngest. I took these pics with my Nikon D70.
