Aerides houlletiana

Sweet smelling flowers for me in the morning and evening. I wish they lasted longer. I have a comment and would like to know if I need to be concerned. I've had this orchid for about four years and it has bloomed for me each year. Last year when I put it in a new basket I broke off a fresh new root. This year it did put out four new nice sized roots; however, it is not producing any new leaves and it took a really long time for the spike to grow, and develop. I do not remember the process taking as long previously. Any thoughts?

That is one sweet Aerides houlletiana!

Loosing a root or two while repotting is not a big problem, breaking a lot of them would be a problem. I don't have this species but I do have the Aerides multiflora and to tell you the truth I don't every see a lot of growth of leaves, it has produced 2 kikis that I have left in the basket and one of them has even started to bloom. Mine also take awhile from the time I first see a spike until it blooms, so you are ok with what you are doing.

Sometimes I think they 'pout'. I have a Phal cornu-cervi that blooms now but when I first got it, went into a pout because I accidentally cut off a leaf when I was unpacking it. It did absolutely nothing (didn't decline either) for a good 14 months. Then it started growing and then blooming.

Very nice Sheryl. I have this species. I don't see they growing too many leaves in a year. It grew may be 2 pairs in last 18 months. It bloomed once for me but has been quiet after that.

Beautiful. One of the prettiest Aerides and some of them do prefer to put out keikis rather than leaves.... I am not complaining as I have now 3 extra plants.

Thank you and yes I did get one keiki last year so I am grateful!

I love this bloom. It is on my wish list.
