Quite an interesting hybrid this . Beaufort is luiteola (Cattleya) x Sophronitis ( now cattleya) coccinea. Usually Beaufort is yellow, and a better shape than this - but - this was made using a yellow coccinea instead of the usual red. Now I would have expected the result to be yellow just like the regular Beaufort, but no, as you see here. In real life there is a streak of brilliant red along the edges of the lip, both sides and end, and the flower otherwise started off yellow, then started to change to the colours here seen as it aged. Not large flowers of course just over 2 inches . But will be an interesting plant as it grows one, I think.

This is "nothing" like any Beaufort's I've ever seen. Not to say there aren't, just never shown.
I can see the parentage completely in this one.

    OK, here's one for you.

The hybrid was registered by Casa Luna Orchids of Beaufort SC in 1963. Because of that, the name is properly pronounced "Byoo-fort". (Or to a local, "Byu-fert")

There is a town by the same name - spelling and all - in NC, and it is pronounced "Bow-fort". Every time I've heard the hybrid name spoken, it was always the NC version, but that is evidently wrong!

Like Roy said, both parents can be seen in this.

My friend Bill in Florida says it's pronunciation depends on which side of the Mason-Dixon line you're on. His pronunciation sounds kinda like "be u fert".

And/or which side of the Atlantic - here is a quote ( courtesy of Google )- "Where did the name Beaufort come from ?- English ( and French)of Norman origin - from various place names - - French Beu, bel, 'fair' or 'lovely , fort-. "stronghold" , "fortress" . Near where I live, and as a relic from the time the Normans invaded England ( in the year 1066) there is a "Beaulieu" - which the French pronounce "bow-lee" and around here now is pronounced "Boo- lee".

But my natural without thinking about it makes Beaufort into Bow-fort.

    An interesting little digression !
