    Default Lc. Jewel Box

One my wife picked out a few years ago.
This poor plant has suffered mightily in my care and after all those years this is maybe only the 3rd time it's bloomed, first bloom here in the Keys. 5 spikes and lots of new growths so I'm hoping it has turned the corner and settled in.
Spikes are short and cramped but once flower gets straightened out, it's really quite nice.

A classic, and if it has turned the corner you can expect a really good show every year. Persistence pays off, yours and the plant's. The plant still looks a bit dehydrated, and perhaps sunburned. If you're sure the roots are healthy it may need a bit more frequent watering than it has historically gotten.

A note on the name: Slc. Jewel Box (classic) or Ctt. Jewel Box (modern). At no time would it correctly have been Lc. but we all know how easily tags get messed up.

That's funny you bring up the Genus.
I thought I remembered it as "Slc." so I was surprised to find an old tag showing it as "Lc" when I repotted it a year ago.
Now with all the name changes I'm thinking it had just gone back to where it came from but I guess not, huh?
I know Sophronitis is now just Catt. but Laelia still exists so I'm curios why it's not an Lc. now.

At the time this was registered it had Sophronitis, Laelia and Cattleya ancestry - Slc. As you noted, Sophronitis has become Cattleya for registration purposes at least, agree with it or not.

Laelia still exists, but is restricted to Mexican species like L. anceps and closely related types. None of those figure in here. Former Brazilian Laelias are also considered Cattleya for registration now, including C. (L.) purpurata and C. (L.) cinnabarina in this case.

Which would leave us with just Cattleya, except the plant formerly known as Cattleya aurantiaca is Guarianthe aurantiaca now, so we have Cattleya and Guarianthe to make Cattlianthe (Ctt.).

So the original registration was Slc. and is reasonable to use. The accepted registration now is Ctt. Lc. never would have been accepted, and you'd have to be selective about which taxonomy changes you accept to get there.

    Oh stop!
Now I've got to change my aurantiaca tag too?

Well, if you're going to do that, make sure you change any C. bowringiana, C. skinneri, C. patinii, and C. x guatemalensis tags to Guarianthe too.

Unlike me, I know most people find no pleasure in keeping up with name changes. As long your tags work for you, all is well. But the Lc. issue for Jewel Box was a case of never was and never will be for both taxonomy and hybrid registration.
